Job description

Summary

New Mexico VA Health Care System is hiring a full‑time Dermatologist. This is an open continuous announcement and will remain open until July 13, 2026. The initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications will be January 26, 2026. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as‑needed basis until positions are filled.

Qualifications
  • United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy)
  • English Language Proficiency: Physicians appointed to direct patient‑care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. §§ 7402(d) and 7407(d)
  • Education: Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • License: Current‑full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State – Territory – or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training: Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification (including ACGME or AOA accredited programs; resident‑currently enrolled physicians may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) under certain conditions and must be fully licensed)
  • Board Certification: Qualified candidates must be Board Certified/Eligible in Dermatology
  • Faculty Eligibility: Must meet eligibility requirements for a faculty appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of New Mexico based on qualifications and experience
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to physically and mentally perform the duties of a Physician under normal and emergent conditions, including moderate lifting 15‑44 lbs and over with assistive devices, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers with both hands, walking or standing up to 4 hours per day, repeated bending up to 1‑2 hours per day, rapid mental and muscular coordination, near vision correctable, hearing aid permitted

Compensation and Benefits

Duties
  • The NMVAHCS – Medicine Service is seeking two part‑time Physicians (Dermatology)
  • Provide comprehensive dermatology care to outpatients, including evaluations, consultations, examinations, diagnosis, and follow‑up
  • Document medical records and maintain correspondence
  • Participate in electronic consultations (e‑consult) and telemedicine, improving access through tele‑dermatology and related technologies
  • Perform minor procedures such as biopsies, shave biopsies, simple excisions, cryotherapy, and intraregional injections
  • Educate patients and families about their conditions and care management
  • Teach dermatology to learners, including medical students, residents, and other trainees
  • Collaborate with primary care providers and subspecialty services to deliver patient care and training
  • Engage in scholarly activity related to the faculty role
  • Work schedule: part‑time days and hours to be discussed with the hiring manager
