Job description

New Mexico VA Health Care System is hiring a full-time Dermatologist. This is an open continuous announcement and will remain open until July 13, 2026. The initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications will be January 26, 2026. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as‑needed basis until positions are filled.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
• English Language Proficiency
• Physicians appointed to direct patient‑care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C.
• 7402(d) and 7407(d)
• Education
• Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
• The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
• License
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
• Approved residencies are: those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME); those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA); and other residencies (non‑US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) that the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided appropriate training and exposure to a range of patient‑care experiences
• Residency providers currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs)
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis
• PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather they are to have a “scope of practice” that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
• Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
• Qualified candidates must be board certified or eligible in Dermatology
• Qualified candidates must meet eligibility requirements for a faculty appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of New Mexico based upon qualifications and experience

• Must be able to physically and mentally perform the duties of a physician under normal and emergent conditions
• Moderate lifting 15–44 lbs; heavy carrying over 15–44 lbs with assistive devices

Duties

• Eligibility and application for EDRP require specific eligibility per VHA policy and submission within four months of appointment; the program offers up to $200,000 over one to five years if approved
• Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
• Provide comprehensive dermatology care to outpatients, including evaluations, consultations, examinations, diagnosis, follow‑up, medical record documentation, and correspondence
• Collaborate with primary care provider staff and provide dermatology training as needed
• Engage in scholarly and other activities related to faculty role; train medical students, dermatology residents, and other trainees
• Educate patients and their families regarding their illness and management of care
• Perform minor procedures such as biopsies, shave biopsies, simple excisions, cryotherapy, and intraregional injections
• Participate in electronic consultations (e‑consult) and telemedicine consultations to improve access to dermatology care through tele‑dermatology and related technologies
• Complete all documentation timely and according to accepted medical standards
• Work schedule: Full‑time, Monday‑Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. PST
