Job summary

Brown University Health seeks a Phlebotomist to obtain blood specimens in the Rhode Island Hospital setting under supervision. You will schedule and perform venipuncture, prepare specimens, label and transport them, and enter patient data into the department database.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, a phlebotomy certificate (or documented internship with 100 venipunctures) and the ability to draw from patients of all ages. It is a daytime, Monday–Friday position.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy certificate through NAACLS and/or completion of a program with an internship of 100 venipunctures.
• In lieu of internship, 6 months phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• In lieu of certification, 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• Ability to perform venipuncture on adults, children and infants.
• Interpersonal skills to explain procedures and ease patient anxiety.
• Clerical skills to maintain records and enter data.

Responsibilities

• Schedules venipunctures or capillary punctures by test priority.
• Uses labels and policies to ensure proper specimen collection.
• Verifies patient identity and preparation prior to collection.
• Obtains blood samples and may collect other specimens as needed.
• Performs coagulation tests and prepares samples for transport.
• Maintains records of specimen procurement.
• Performs related clerical tasks and interviews patients for registration data.
• Enters data into the department system and checks for billing discrepancies.
