Job summary

Brown University Health is seeking a Phlebotomist to obtain blood and other specimens from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units, following department procedures and universal precautions. You will perform venipuncture and capillary punctures, verify patient identity, and ensure proper labeling, handling and transport of specimens to the lab.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy certificate from NAACLS and/or completion of a phlebotomy certificate program with internship (100 venipunctures).
• In lieu of internship, 6 months phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• In lieu of phlebotomy certification, 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Performs functions with computer system for collection and documentation of patient specimens.
• Patient Registration including ID, demographics, insurance, ordering provider, test orders, and scanning.
• Manages ABN including codes, patient signature, document management and scanning.
• Clerical activities: medical necessity follow-up, filing, checklists, phones, report delivery, admitting patients to treatment areas.
• Maintains standing orders for expirations and renewals.
• Provides patients with forms and instructions for tests and prep.
• Schedules venipunctures/cocapillary punctures, uses labels, follows Pathology Handbook for proper collection.
• Verifies patient identity and prep before venipuncture.
• Obtains blood samples; may collect other specimens.
• Obtains samples for specialized tests and monitors dosage timing.
• May perform bleeding times.
• Labels, wraps and transports samples; maintains records.
• Follows procedures per policy and universal precautions.
• Register patients and order tests; verify policies and documentation.
• Interviews patient to obtain insurance and biographical information to complete records.
• Provides forms and prep instructions; may contact patient to repeat tests.
• Follows procedures for home sample collection.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
