Job summary

McLaren Health Care is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to perform phlebotomy and specimen collection at in-house or off-site locations. The role includes preparing and labeling specimens, entering orders into hospital systems, and ensuring proper handling and storage of materials.

The candidate will assist in various laboratory areas under supervision, perform waived tests, and participate in quality control and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certified as a phlebotomy technician.
• Experience drawing blood or phlebotomy training.
• Experience in a clinical laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

• Performs proper specimen collection including patient prep, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation, and storage of specimens; adheres to all standards for lab procedures.
• Collects, verifies, and processes patient registration data and test orders into hospital LIS/LIS; ensures ABN compliance.
• Processes specimens according to established guidelines.
• Maintains safe and clean working environment; follows infection-control and hazardous waste policies.
• Performs waived tests and assists in other testing platforms under supervision.
• Assists in quality control and performance improvement activities.
• Ensures standards are met for quality, timeliness, and customer service.
• Orients and/or trains new staff.
• Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Answers telephone calls, performs computer tasks, prints reports and provides test results.
• Performs therapeutic phlebotomies.
• Dispatches and manages specimens and slides for consults and referrals.
