Job summary

McLaren Health Care is seeking a part-time Laboratory Assistant to perform phlebotomy and specimen collection at our Michigan facilities. The role includes patient education on specimen collection, data entry into LIS/SIS, and assisting in cytology prep as needed.

The position requires a high school diploma and may prefer certification as a phlebotomy technician, with experience in a clinical laboratory environment. Variable daily hours; weekends required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Responsibilities

• Performs proper specimen collection (blood and non-blood), including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation, and storage of specimens.
• Collects, verifies, and processes patient registration data and test orders into hospital/LIS systems, including ABN compliance.
• Processes specimens according to established guidelines.
• Maintains safe and clean working environment and adheres to infection-control and hazardous waste policies.
• Performs waived tests and assists in other testing platforms under technical oversight.
• Assists in quality control and performance improvement activities.
• Ensures standards are met (quality, timeliness, customer service).
• Orients and trains new staff.
• Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements governing the department.
• Answer calls, perform computer tasks, print reports, and provide test results.
• Performs therapeutic phlebotomies and manages specimens/slides for consults and referrals.
• Performs other related duties as required.
