Qualifications

• Must have completed an internal or external phlebotomy training program.
• Experience in specimen collection and processing preferred.
• Fluent English required for patient and partner communication.

Responsibilities

• Performs blood draws by venipuncture according to standard protocol, ensuring patient safety and quality specimen collection.
• Performs specimen collection using appropriate techniques and adheres to requirements. Provides patients and/or care providers with instructions and necessary materials for specimen collection.
• Provides immediate patient care if patient exhibits signs of post-venipuncture reactions (e.g., vasovagal).
• Pro-actively assesses patient presentation and escorts patients to draw room as needed.
• Performs data entry in HIS/LIS in compliance with policies.
• Ensures proper container type, centrifugation, and transport conditions for specimens.
• Releases orders in ambulatory health system and receives specimens in LIS; handles outside orders as needed.
• Consults Phlebotomy Coordinator or Lab Leadership when necessary; assists nursing staff as requested.
• Performs specimen processing duties such as aliquoting urine and separating samples as required.
• Understands pre-analytical variables and their impact on test results; ensures specimen suitability for add-on testing.
• Responds to telephone inquiries and provides customer service to callers.
• Instructs and mentors students, employees, patients and other health care providers as applicable.
• Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and may cover alternate locations as needed.
