Pharmacy Technician, Certified or Trainee, Ambulatory Care, Float

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician Certified or Trainee to join our team. This position operates under the general supervision of a pharmacist, coordinating and performing technical activities in dispensing areas. It involves direct contact with patients in hospital rooms, discretionary patient room entry, and collaboration with hospital staff. The technician supports development, coordination, and training within their assigned areas, providing functional supervision as needed. All pharmacy technicians must achieve certification within one year of employment. The role involves 8-hour shifts between 7:00 am and 8:30 pm, with occasional hours outside this window and rotating weekends, supporting both pediatric and adult ambulatory care at a UI Health Care central fill pharmacy location.

The department intends to hire either a Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Certified Technician, depending on the candidate's qualifications. Please specify your preference in your application materials.

Duties include:

  • Providing patient/customer service and communicating according to established guidelines.
  • Receiving and screening prescriptions for completeness and readiness.
  • Conducting patient interviews to collect profile information.
  • Screening prescriptions for completeness and formulary status.
  • Determining wait/pick-up times and managing patient call checks.
  • Triaging prescriptions and recognizing workflow patterns.
  • Answering and triaging phone calls.
  • Utilizing and maintaining the ScriptPro Robot.
  • Filling cells/cassettes and mapping brand changes.
  • Returning unwanted prescriptions and performing daily maintenance.
  • Filling/refilling prescriptions, reading labels, and packaging medications accurately.
  • Compounding medications for prescriptions and clinic doses.
  • Handling mailing and shipping preparations.
  • Performing inventory activities, including stock returns and order placements.
  • Maintaining records related to dispensing activities.
  • Managing narcotics and controlled substances, including inventories and audits.
  • Auditing compliance in patient care areas (Certified Technicians only).
  • Maintaining cleanliness and assisting in training new technicians.
  • Coordinating activities with team members.

Minimum Eligibility for Trainee Technician:

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at hire.
  • Certification within one year of employment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Two years of post-high school experience/education in natural sciences or completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program.

Minimum Eligibility for Certified Technician:

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at hire.
  • Certification through PTCB or NHA, with ongoing education requirements.
  • Two years of relevant experience or education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in public contact/customer service, inventory maintenance, teamwork, detail-oriented work, and healthcare interactions.
  • Knowledge of Windows-based programs.
