Responsibilities

1. Assist in most aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist, including preparing sterile products and chemotherapy, and managing controlled substance distribution.
2. Operate in accordance with standard procedures and guidelines under the supervision of a pharmacist.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure

For West Virginia Pharmacy Techs:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• National certification (PTCB or EXCPT) and registration with the applicable state Board of Pharmacy upon hire (except PA), or two years of pharmacy technician or healthcare experience with certification and registration within specified timeframes.
• Must complete job-specific competencies or obtain specialty certification within 90 days of hire.

For Maryland Pharmacy Techs:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Registration with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy upon hire or two years of experience with certification and registration within specified timeframes.
• Must complete job-specific competencies or obtain specialty certification within 90 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate's degree, post-high school science education, or graduation from a pharmacy technician training program.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for reading physicians' orders, preparing medications, delivering medications, managing drug supplies, and maintaining accurate records, among other duties. Certain tasks can only be performed by pharmacists, such as receiving oral prescriptions and consulting with prescribers.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to walk, stand, or sit for long periods, lift up to 30 pounds, and push up to 50 pounds. Dexterity is required for handling medications.
