Job summary

The City of New York’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner is seeking an Institutional Aide for a temporary 18-month assignment in the Facilities Unit in New York City. Responsibilities include cleaning, waste disposal, porter duties, and basic maintenance of floors and facilities as part of daily operations.

Under supervision, performs routine work such as cleaning, sanitation, and handling of supplies; ability to read and write English is required.

Qualifications

• Ability to read and write English and to understand and carry out simple instructions.

Responsibilities

• Disposal of garbage and sanitation; breakdown of corrugated cartons.
• Empties wastepaper baskets; polishes metal; moves furniture.
• Washes plaster, tile and marble walls and wallpaper.
• Floor maintenance: sweeping, mopping, rinse mopping, stripping, waxing and buff polishing.
• Cleans porter’s closet, storage and supply areas.
• Outside grounds-work: sweeps, cleans trash; shovels snow when applicable.
• Cleans toilets, baths and showers; offices; stairs and hallways.
• Packages and labels bio-hazardous waste; records transfers to contractor.
