Job summary

Code Metal in San Francisco is seeking a People Operations Generalist who will own onboarding, offboarding, benefits, compliance, and the employee lifecycle programs that run on our calendar. You will report to our Director of People Operations and work closely with Recruiting, Business Operations, Finance, IT, and Security.

This role is for a builder and offers space to improve and document processes so they scale.

Qualifications

• 4+ years in People Operations or HR generalist roles at a fast-growing startup.
• Hands-on experience with a PEO or HRIS.
• Working knowledge of U.S. employment compliance across multiple states, including Massachusetts & California.
• You've run execution for at least one people program end to end, such as open enrollment, a review cycle, or an onboarding program.
• Comfort in Google Sheets, reconciling data across systems and building reports, and storytelling with data.
• Strong judgment and discretion with confidential information, including knowing when to follow a policy and when to flag an exception.
• Excellent verbal & written communications and a warm, clear, and accessible communication and employee engagement style.
• Nice to have: experience in defense, government contracting, or other regulated company.
• Nice to have: helped select or implement an HRIS or other complex software tool.
• Nice to have: experience running communications for people programs, rollouts, all hands segments, or manager toolkits.
• Nice to have: automation, no code, or AI tools (Zapier, Google Apps Script, etc.) that reduce manual work.

Responsibilities

• Own onboarding, offboarding, job changes, and background checks; keep Justworks and roster accurate so downstream systems trust the data.
• Run the operating side of our twice a year feedback cycle, compensation reviews, and new hire onboarding: timelines, manager packets, reminders, and follow-through.
• Administer benefits and leave; be the first stop for benefits questions, open enrollment, and leaves of absence.
• Keep us compliant as we hire in new states; manage I-9s, postings and trainings, state registrations, and updates to handbook and policy.
• Build the systems we'll grow on; evaluate transition from PEO to HRIS, roll out new systems, and document automated workflows.
• Turn people data into answers; build and maintain headcount, org, and program reports.
• Be a trusted resource; answer questions with discretion, document processes, and fix root causes.
