Job summary

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago seeks a perfusionist to provide extracorporeal support during pediatric cardiac surgeries, selecting equipment and maintaining perfusion safety under cardiac surgeons and anesthesiologists.

The role includes operating the heart/lung machine, anesthesia-related circuit work, data entry, and long-term patient support outside the OR. On-call duties are required, with ongoing professional development and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in sciences required for entrance in a CAAHEP accredited school of perfusion.
• Certification/licensure or board eligible for American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion and Illinois Licensure.
• Basic Life Support Certification required by ABVCardiovascular Surgery Board.
• Maintains State of Illinois license and certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
• Ability to work varying shifts, rotate days off and weekends as rotation requires.

Responsibilities

• Conducts extracorporeal circulation and administers medications, blood components, and anesthetic agents as prescribed.
• Operates and maintains heart/lung machine, heater/cooler, blood gas analyzer, cell saver, and monitors during surgery.
• Maintains an accurate perfusion record for each case performed.
• Enters patient charges per procedure into hospital billing software and maintains records.
• Accepts on-call availability for emergency procedures, approximately 50% of the year.
• Instructs student perfusionists and evaluates their performance.
• Pursues professional growth through continuing education, meetings, and seminars.
