The perfusionist provides extracorporeal support under the direction of the cardiac surgeons during open and closed heart surgery through the use of a specialized and essential heart/lung machine. The perfusionist selects appropriate equipment for extracorporeal support and is educated to conduct extracorporeal circulation to ensure the safe management of physiologic functions by monitoring and adjusting the necessary variables, taking corrective action through established protocols when abnormal situations arise and keeping the cardic surgeons and anesthesiologist fully informed. In addition to the operation of the heart/lung machine perfusionists often provide extended, long-term support of patient circulation outside of the operating room environment.

The pay range for this job indicates minimum and maximum targets for the position. Ranges are regularly reviewed to stay aligned with market conditions.
