Job description

Job Overview

A Perfusionist is a member of the open‑heart surgical team responsible for operating the heart‑lung machine to maintain patient homeostasis, anticoagulation, and blood gas balance during surgery.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain perfusion equipment (heart‑lung machine, autotransfusion equipment, intra‑aortic balloon pump, ventricular assist devices, etc.).
  • Perform, monitor, and maintain proper anticoagulation during extracorporeal procedures and reversal of anticoagulation.
  • Ensure adequate myocardial protection and communicate status of temperature, time, pressures, and volume delivery to surgeons.
  • Monitor all aspects of perfusion, including blood gases, electrolytes, hematocrit, urine output, blood pressure, cerebral perfusion, and anesthesia.
  • Administer blood, blood products, and medications under direction.
  • Perform point‑of‑care laboratory analyses (ACT, ABG, electrolytes, hematocrit) during bypass.
  • Collect and enter STS analysis reports and apply quality‑improvement techniques.
  • Maintain accurate perfusion records and documentation.
  • Participate in CAP point‑of‑care testing and perform daily/monthly controls.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold safety protocols.
  • Review patient records for medical history and current medications.
  • Comply with departmental policies, procedures, health, and safety regulations.
  • Order and maintain perfusion and ECMO supplies.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in pediatric or adult perfusion.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • Graduate of an accredited Perfusion Education Program.
  • Preferred: Master’s Degree.
  • Certification: Perfusionist – American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) required.
  • Certification: Perfusionist – Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners licensure required.
  • Eligible to sit for the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion within 6 months of hire and obtain board certification within 1 year.
Functional Demands

Medium physical demands, including occasional lifting of up to 20lbs and frequent sitting, standing, walking, and use of computer. Requires frequent hand‑motor skill and verbal communication.
