Job summary

Children's National Hospital in Washington, DC, seeks a Patient Care Technician to join the multidisciplinary health care team. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, you will perform basic nursing tasks, help maintain a safe, clean patient care setting and assist staff with patient flow.

Requirements include High School Diploma or GED, CNA/EMT/CPCT and BLS certifications, plus healthcare experience in pediatrics if possible.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 1 year in a healthcare setting if possible, in pediatrics.
• 1 semester clinical experience completed at an accredited school of nursing or military corpsman training (Preferred)

Responsibilities

• Patient Services – Admission: orienting family to call lights, monitor and unit; set up monitor and alarms; perform vital signs, height, weight and head circumference.
• Patient Services – Daily Living: ADLs including bathing, skin care, nutrition, tube feeding and tray care; apply skin creams; collect cultures, urine and stool samples.
• Direct Patient Care: recognize and report pain, assist with trach care and EVDs, care for central lines and dying patients; maintain room readiness and patient flow.
• Monitor Surveillance: observe monitor deviations and follow guidelines.
• Infection Control: care for isolation patients; adhere to hand washing; clean equipment after each patient.
• Documentation: update nursing database and vital signs timely; notify charge nurse.
• Communication/Professionalism: liaise with RN and team; maintain professional relationships; report changes; participate in shift reports.
• Shared Leadership: stay informed about unit issues; contribute to discussions.
• Safety: promote patient safety; self-check behavior; clear verbal and written communication.
