Job summary

UAB Medicine in Birmingham, AL, is seeking an OR support professional to perform basic clinical and non-clinical patient care activities under supervision. The role involves assisting OR staff and anesthesia teams, monitoring the OR environment, and transporting patients and supplies.

Requirements include a High School diploma or equivalent and a BLS certification within 1 month of hire. The position is based in the Main OR at UAB St.

Qualifications

• BLS Provider required within 1 month of hire. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
• High school diploma or equivalent; relevant experience preferred.
• Experience assisting OR staff with anesthesia-related tasks is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist operating room staff and anesthesia providers with technical patient care aspects.
• Monitor and maintain the OR environment; clean and disinfect surgical areas and equipment.
• Transport patients, equipment, instruments, specimens, and supplies as needed.
• Lift and position patients per standards with emphasis on safety.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living as required.
• Report and document changes in patient condition to nursing staff.
• Perform clinical duties such as oxygen setup, pulse oximetry, specimen collection and EKGs as directed.
• Obtain and record vitals, weight, and inputs/outputs.

Job Description

Perform basic clinical and non-clinical patient care activities under supervision.

• Assists the operating room staff including the anesthesia providers with certain technical aspects of patient care.
• Monitors and controls the operating room environment. Cleans and disinfects the surgical suite and/or reusable equipment and supplies. Disposes soiled linen and solid wastes. Cleans anesthetizing location. Cares for ancillary anesthesia equipment.
• Transports patients, equipment, instruments, specimens and supplies.
• Lifts and positions patients according to practice standards. Demonstrates an awareness of patient and personal safety.
• Assist patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living.
• Reports findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to nursing staff. Documents necessary records.
• Performs certain technical patient care duties in the hospital as directed by the staff nurse such asoxygen setup, pulse oximetry setup, specimen collection and EKGs.
• Obtain and record vitals, weight, and inputs and outputs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

• BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.

Education

• High School diploma equivalency OR 1 year of applicable cumulative job specific experience required.
