Job summary

The City of Birmingham seeks a Payroll Specialist to handle payroll preparation, processing, and record maintenance, ensuring compliance with local, state and federal laws. The role includes tax, benefit, and garnishment processing, as well as confidential handling of payroll data.

Responsibilities include new-hire processing, HRIS data management, and generating payroll-related reports for government agencies.

Qualifications

• Experience processing payroll for employees including validation and reconciliation of time.
• Experience reviewing time and attendance according to wage and hour laws (e.g., Fair Labor Standards Act).
• Experience using payroll or HRIS software (Kronos, Workday, Lawson, Evolution).

Responsibilities

• Communicates and collaborates with department heads, employees, and vendors to respond to inquiries and disseminate information related to payroll.
• Facilitates the new hire process by processing paperwork and updating records in HRIS.
• Maintains payroll records and processes deductions such as taxes and benefits.
• Prepares payroll tax forms and reports for submission to IRS, state, and local agencies.
• Performs payroll reconciliation and corrects payment issues to ensure accuracy.
