Job summary

The Personnel Board of Jefferson County Alabama is seeking a Payroll Specialist for the City of Birmingham to handle payroll preparation, processing, and maintenance in accordance with applicable laws. The role may also touch on personnel records, new hire processes, and employee deductions with strict confidentiality.

Candidates will maintain records, process deductions, and coordinate with benefit providers and governmental agencies to ensure accurate payments.

Qualifications

• Experience processing payroll for employees including validation and reconciliation of time.
• Experience reviewing time and attendance according to wage and hour laws (e.g., Fair Labor Standards Act).
• Experience using payroll or HRIS software (Kronos, Workday, Lawson, Evolution).

Responsibilities

• Communicates and collaborates with department heads, employees, citizens, board and council members, vendors, etc., by responding to inquiries and drafting correspondence.
• Facilitates the new hire process by requesting registers, processing new hire paperwork, scheduling orientations, and submitting paperwork to appropriate agencies.
• Manages HR information related to employee pay and benefits by maintaining personnel action data using HRIS.
• Oversees payroll processing by entering leave information and reviewing leave reports to finalize payroll.
• Prepares payroll tax forms and reports for submission to IRS, state, and local entities.
• Manages pension benefits documentation and applications to ensure correct benefits.
• Performs payroll reconciliation by reviewing and correcting payments to ensure accuracy.
