Job summary

HRforGrowth is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager for a Brooklyn, NY nonprofit client. You will oversee end-to-end payroll for salaried, hourly, and grant-funded staff, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with federal, state, and local laws.

You will collaborate with Finance and HR, maintain payroll data integrity and security, manage tax filings and year-end reporting, and drive process improvements in an onsite/hybrid environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field is required.
• 3–5 years of payroll administration experience.
• Experience with multiple funding sources or grants preferred.
• Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll laws and tax regulations.
• Proficiency with payroll systems; UKG Ready preferred.
• Attention to detail and confidentiality.
• Proficient with Microsoft Excel.
• Ability to work onsite/hybrid.

Responsibilities

• Manage the end-to-end payroll processing for salaried, hourly, and grant-funded employees.
• Ensure payroll is processed accurately and on schedule in compliance with applicable laws.
• Review and approve payroll registers, tax filings, and wage payments.
• Maintain payroll calendars and year-end requirements.
• Oversee payroll tax filings, W-2s, 1099s, and related reports.
• Respond to payroll audits and coordinate with external auditors.
• Monitor changes in payroll legislation and implement updates.
• Maintain payroll systems and employee records with data accuracy and confidentiality.
• Partner with HR to ensure accurate onboarding, offboarding, and status changes.
• Reconcile payroll accounts and coordinate with Finance on GL postings.
• Support payroll system upgrades, testing, and process improvements.
• Serve as primary contact for payroll inquiries from employees and managers.
• Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies and corrections promptly.
• Provide guidance on pay, deductions, benefits, timekeeping, and policies.
• Develop and document payroll procedures and internal controls.
• Identify opportunities to improve payroll efficiency and compliance.
