Job description

Primarily Onsite | $120,000-$125,000 Base Salary | Exempt

Own Payroll. Work Directly With Leadership. Make an Impact.

If you're an experienced payroll professional who wants more than simply processing payroll, this role deserves your attention. Anesthesia Management Professionals, Inc. (AMP) is looking for a Payroll Manager to take ownership of payroll and compensation for approximately 250 physicians and 20 bi-weekly employees.

Reporting directly to the Controller, you'll step into a highly visible, hands‑on position where accuracy matters, your judgment is trusted, and you'll work directly with physicians, leadership, Accounting, and Financial Services. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who understands both payroll and accounting, enjoys solving complex compensation issues, and wants to own an important financial function from start to finish.

Base salary: $120,000 - $125,000 annually

The position is primarily onsite in the Kearny Mesa/Ruffin Road area of San Diego, with the potential for some hybrid flexibility after approximately six months of training.

What You'll Own
  • Manage payroll and physician compensation processes with minimal supervision from the Controller
  • Process monthly payroll for approximately 250 physicians and bi‑weekly payroll for approximately 20 employees
  • Ensure payroll deadlines, deductions, tax withholdings, expense allocations, and physician compensation adjustments are accurate and timely
  • Prepare quarterly and annual payroll tax reporting, including year‑end W‑2 processing
  • Maintain and strengthen payroll controls, procedures, and documentation
  • Process pension allocations in accordance with plan guidelines
  • Research and resolve payroll and compensation discrepancies and questions
  • Create payroll and financial reports using internal systems, Excel, Crystal Reports, and other reporting tools
  • Partner directly with newly hired physicians to explain compensation processes during orientation
  • Implement and document Board and management policies related to payroll and compensation
  • Support general ledger activities and special accounting and financial projects
  • Ensure applicable expenses are accurately allocated between the company and individual physicians
  • Work closely with Accounting, Financial Services, management, and other internal teams
  • Handle highly sensitive compensation and financial information with discretion and confidentiality
You May Be a Great Fit If You Have
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
  • At least 4 years of accounting experience, including general ledger experience
  • Hands‑on payroll experience and a strong understanding of payroll processing, controls, deductions, tax withholding, and reporting
  • Knowledge of applicable payroll, accounting, and government reporting requirements
  • Strong Excel skills and confidence working with detailed financial data
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with exceptional attention to accuracy
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and firm deadlines
  • Confidence communicating directly with physicians, employees, leadership, and external stakeholders about detailed or sensitive compensation matters
  • A collaborative, approachable working style and willingness to work closely with a small internal team
  • The ability to learn internally developed systems and processes
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP/Great Plains is highly preferred but not required.
What Will Make You Successful Here
  • You're someone who notices when the numbers don't look right and doesn't stop until you understand why.
  • You take ownership rather than waiting for someone else to solve the problem. You can move comfortably between detailed payroll calculations, accounting questions, reporting deadlines, and conversations with physicians or leadership.
  • Most importantly, you understand that payroll isn't just another transaction. People depend on you to get it right.
One Important Thing to Know Before You Apply

Year‑end is a critical period for this team. Activity increases shortly after Thanksgiving and continues through December as the team completes year‑end payroll and financial close activities.

Some extended hours may be required during this period, and the team works on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day and New Year's Day are paid holidays. We want candidates to understand this expectation upfront so there are no surprises later.

Why Join AMP?
  • This isn't a role where you'll simply inherit a process and push buttons.
  • You'll have meaningful ownership of one of AMP's most important financial functions, direct exposure to physicians and organizational leadership, and the opportunity to improve processes while becoming a trusted resource across the organization.
  • You'll be joining a role where accuracy, accountability, judgment, and follow‑through matter - and where your work is noticed.
  • If you have the payroll expertise, accounting foundation, and ownership mindset we're looking for, we encourage you to apply.
