Job summary

LHH in Indianapolis, IN is seeking a Payroll Accountant to join the finance team. You will handle multi-state payroll processing, reconcile payroll data, and contribute to month-end close and reporting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 3+ years of payroll and accounting experience.
• Experience processing multi-state payroll preferred.
• Strong understanding of payroll taxes, deductions, garnishments, and compliance requirements.
• Experience with general ledger entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close activities.
• Advanced Excel skills including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP preferred.
• Experience with payroll systems such as ADP, UKG, Workday, Paylocity, or similar platforms.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage confidential information.
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Process multi-state payroll accurately and on time for hourly and salaried employees.
• Calculate wages, bonuses, commissions, deductions, garnishments, and benefit withholdings.
• Review payroll data for accuracy and resolve discrepancies before processing.
• Prepare and post payroll-related journal entries to the general ledger.
• Reconcile payroll accounts and balance sheet accounts on a regular basis.
• Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities.
• Maintain payroll records and support internal and external audits.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
• Prepare payroll reporting and support payroll tax filings.
• Research and resolve payroll-related questions from employees and management.
• Partner closely with Human Resources and Accounting teams to ensure accurate employee data and reporting.
• Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes and controls.
