Job summary

The New York Public Library's Soundview Library seeks a Library Information Assistant to serve patrons of all ages and support outreach and programming efforts. The role involves helping with circulation and reference tasks, guiding users in accessing print, media and digital resources, and promoting library services.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with a strong liberal arts background.
• Public service experience with diverse patrons is important.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Ability to work well in a team environment.
• Appreciation of literature and a desire to encourage reading in others.
• Strong organizational and planning abilities; able to manage multiple tasks.
• Proficient with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google apps, PCs, Macs, and e-reader devices; knowledge of online searching and databases.

Responsibilities

• Provides circulation/reference service and instruction to library patrons of all ages.
• Answers questions in person, by phone, and electronically.
• Performs community outreach to promote library services.
• Assists in planning and delivering library programs for children, teens and adults.
• Instructs patrons on using the Internet, computer applications and Library services.
• Assists with fines/fees, collection development, reserves and opening/closing procedures.
