The Department of Neurology is seeking a Patient ServiceCoordinator to work as a team member at the Falls Concourseat Johns Hopkins Green Spring Station campus. This a unique rolewith administrative and clinical functions with opportunities towork in different environments, which includes our Howard Countysite from time to time. Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Offer friendly, courteous, and confidential assistance to everypatient to ensure that the patient has a positive experience whileat Johns Hopkins Department of Neurosciences at Green SpringStation.
  • Maintain accurate information on each patient to facilitate thepatient encounter. Use automated systems to expedite patientscheduling, pre-registration, check-in, and check-out. Work withothers in a team environment.
  • Schedule patients for clinic appointments, relaying anynecessary information to the patient regarding the appt.
  • Coordinate visits either within the department or betweenseveral departments.
  • Confirm appointments, manage cancellations, reschedules, andnew appointments.
  • Telephone interview patients and/or family members to obtainaccurate pre-registration information pertinent to the visit.
  • Communicate directions, appointment information, in a helpful,courteous demeanor.
  • Send medical questionnaire forms to patients to obtain missinginformation as needed.
  • Verify and enter pre-registration and insurance informationinto the computer system and prepare daily printed schedules fordesignated areas.
  • Fill vacancies due to cancellations.
  • Register patients for clinical appointments using thecomputerized database.
  • Inform patients of the costs of care being provided, and guidethem to appropriate resources for further information, guidance, orassistance as needed.
  • Arrange or assist in arranging patient transportation ifneeded.
  • Answer phones, respond to messages, and provide routineinformation to callers.
  • If a patient must be admitted to the hospital, providenecessary documents to the receiving facility as needed.
  • Collect time of service payments, issue receipt.
  • Discuss patient charges, if appropriate, with patients and/orpatients' families.
  • Assist with basic insurance and third-party queries and explainpayment policies as applicable.
  • Provide accurate and timely messages to MDs, fulfill HIPAAcompliant incoming and outgoing medical records requests, manageincoming and outgoing faxes, in-basket messages
  • In close partnership with health care team, assures smooth andefficient patient flow and clinical operation.
  • Assists patients to exam room and prepares patients forexamination. Assists patients in wheelchairs and stretchers withtransfers to and from exam tables, procedure tables, and scalesutilizing proper body mechanics and safety measures. Identifiespatients with special needs.
  • Directs patients with medical complaints who call or arrive tothe clinic to the patient's physician and/or emergency room forassistance.
  • Orders, stocks, and maintains exam rooms and clinic areas withstandard levels of supplies, medications, linens, nourishments,forms and equipment. Recognizes patient care trends affecting unitsupplies and notifies clinic manager. Removes and replaces suppliesprior to expiration.
  • Operates clinical equipment according to equipment proceduresincluding safety and quality control checks. Checks clinic area androoms for malfunctioning equipment and general maintenance problemson a regular basis. Reports findings to appropriate person orarranges for repairs as required.
  • Ensures that soiled linen, needle containers and potentiallyinfectious waste are appropriately disposed and removed from theclinic and exam area according to the infection controlguidelines.
  • Performs related and delegated tasks, which includes requestsfor prescription refills, taking and relaying messages, directingpatient flow and running errands.
  • Works with healthcare team to assure smooth and efficientpatient flow and clinical operation. Problem solves obstacles tothroughput process and notifies manager and patients of waittime.
  • Assist with front desk duties, including but not limited to-filing, scanning, purging records, clearing the fax machine anddistributing documents appropriately, printing EPR notes.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent
  • One year work experience in customer service required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience tothe extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of medical insurance coverage.
  • Two years in a similar service-oriented industry.
  • Experience in the Johns Hopkins system.

Starting Salary Range: $16.60 - $29.50 HRLY ($47,944 targeted;Commensurate w/exp.)

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
