Qualifications

Responsibilities

We are seeking a Patient Service Coordinator/MAwho will work as a team member with the Johns Hopkins Division ofGastroenterology and Hepatology at Green Spring Station.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Patient Service Coordinator Responsibilities 50%
  • Maintain accurate information on each patient to facilitate thepatient encounter.
  • Use automated systems to expedite patient scheduling,pre-registration, check-in, and check-out. Work with others in ateam environment.
  • Schedule patients for laboratory tests, medical examinations,and consultations.
  • Relay information to patients regarding preparation forlaboratory tests and examinations.
  • Coordinate visits either within the department or betweenseveral departments.
  • Telephone and interview patients and/or family members toobtain accurate pre-registration information and to confirmappointments.
  • Print and mail directions, maps, fee schedules, and departmentspecific information to patients. Send medical questionnaire formsto patients to obtain missing information.
  • Verify and enter pre-registration and insurance informationinto the computer system and prepare daily printed schedules fordesignated areas.
  • Obtain and/or verify patient's demographic data by phone or inperson. Confirm appointments by telephone and/or mail.
  • Fill vacancies due to cancellations. Obtain pre-certificationsas required by patients' health care insurers or managed careproviders.
  • Inform patients of costs of care being provided, and guide themto appropriate resources for further information, guidance, orassistance.
  • Arrange or assist in arranging patient transportation. Answerphones and provide routine information to callers.
  • Collect time of service payments, issues receipts, and preparecash settlement records. Input diagnostic and procedure codes toTAP system for computer billing.
  • Discuss patient charges, if appropriate, with patients and/orpatients' families. Work with available institutional support toevaluate eligibility for alternative sources of financing such asMedicaid, Patient Care Funds, loans or other payment sources.
  • Refer patient to appropriate office and ensure application forfunds has been made. Prepare patient's statement of charges andreview with patient.
Medical Assistant Responsibilities 50%
  • The Medical Assistant (MA) has duties and responsibilitiesrelated to patient care in the ambulatory clinic environment.
  • The individual displays responsible behaviors, communicateseffectively to others and functions as a member of the healthcareteam.
  • The MA functions under the direct supervision and authority ofthe physician when performing clinical tasks during patientcare.
  • The MA reports to the clinic operations manager, who isresponsible for administrative supervision, staff development, andorientation of the MA to the areas policies and procedures.
  • The MA must demonstrate competency in all skills related to theperformance of patient care.
  • The MA maintains an inventory of examination/procedure roomsupplies, assists in the organization of efficient patient flow,and organizes the clinic environment to assure patient safety. TheMA demonstrates problem-solving skills as they relate to patientcare activities.
  • Participates in the care of the patient, under the directsupervision of the Physician and in collaboration with thehealthcare team.
  • Collects patient information and assessment data. Obtains andrecords patients vital signs, temperature, pulse, respirations,blood pressure, weight and height.
  • Obtains additional data from patient and significant otherbased on initial data collection. Performs chart review prior toclinic visit to obtain historical data.
  • Monitors patient status recognizing and reporting abnormalfindings or changes in condition. Organizes patient care activitiesbased on assessment findings.
  • Confirms and clarifies written orders prior to implementationof delegated tasks. Maintains and uses principles of aseptictechniques and infection control when performing clinical dutiesand tasks.
  • Under clinical supervision, performs delegated procedurescommon to the specialty area in a safe, effective, and efficientmanner according to Clinical Practice Policy and Procedures.Assists practitioner in identified patientprocedures/treatments/examinations, (preparation, positioning,supplies, equipment).
  • Act as a trainer for new employee and extern orientation, andcoordinates activities related to proficiency for these employees.Recognizes emergency situations and implements emergency proceduresaccording to clinic guidelines.
  • Administers first aid, CPR, and maintains emergency equipmentand supplies.
  • Provides appropriate patient education, health informationmaterials and community resource lists as directed, and maintainseducational supplies.
  • Identifies patients need for additional information and refersto appropriate healthcare resources.
  • Perform injections, including but not limited to, flu,Hepatitis A, B, and C Take pre-visit vitals, including butnotlimited to, weight, blood pressure, temperature
  • In close partnership with health care team, assures smooth andefficient patient flow and clinical operation.
  • Assists patients in wheelchairs and stretchers with transfersto and from exam tables, procedure tables, and scales utilizingproper body mechanics and safety measures. Identifies patients withspecial needs.
  • Directs patients with medical complaints who call or arrive tothe clinic to the patient’s physician and/or emergency room forassistance.
  • Orders, stocks, and maintains exam rooms and clinic areas withstandard levels of supplies, medications, linens, nourishments,forms and equipment. Recognizes patient care trends affecting unitsupplies and notifies clinic manager.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or graduation equivalent andcertification/registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA,RMA,AMT, NAHP) required.
  • One year of work experience in customer service.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience tothe extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the Johns Hopkins system.
  • Two years in similar service-oriented industry.
  • Medical terminology and a working knowledge of Windows,Microsoft Office and internet.
  • Knowledge of medical insurance coverage.

Failure to meetthis requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas,laboratories, working with research subjects, or involvingcommunity contact requires documentation of immune status againstRubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella(chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received theTdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may includedocumentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicellavaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratorytesting. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases areordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except forthose employees who provide results of blood tests or immunizationdocumentation from their own health care providers. Anyvaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no costin our Occupational Health office.
