Job summary

UPMC Gastroenterology Associates is seeking a friendly, organized Patient Services Representative to join our team. The role supports front office operations and surgery scheduling in a busy gastroenterology practice, delivering exceptional patient service.

Responsibilities include greeting patients, registering them, collecting payments, scheduling follow-ups, guiding portal use, and verifying insurance. This onsite, full-time role requires high school completion and strong PC skills.

Qualifications

• Two years of experience in a medical / billing / fiscal or customer service function is preferred.
• Completion of high school graduate or equivalent is required.
• Experience with personal computer-based applications and typing skills are preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
• Prior experience with Epic or Medipac or other health records systems is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide a warm, welcoming greeting to all patients.
• Guide patients through self-arrival technology or check in at front desk.
• Collect copayments and patient payments at point of service.
• Confirm and update patient registration information at checkout.
• Schedule follow-up appointments within the practice at checkout.
• Schedule or connect patients with resources for ancillary services at checkout.
• Assist patients in navigating the healthcare system with clear instructions and follow-up as needed.
• Address concerns to restore a positive patient experience.
• Register patients in Biometrics program and explain benefits.
• Promote the MyUPMC patient portal and assist with registration.
• Educate patients regarding financial responsibility and connect with advocacy resources.
• Verify insurance benefits with carriers through online or phone verification.
• Obtain signatures for consent to treatment and financial responsibility per HIPAA.
• Distribute and triage phone calls to other departments and providers.
• Assist with administrative duties including scanning and faxing documents.
• Remain knowledgeable about the UPMC Patient Portal and help patients access health information.
