Job summary

IU Health in Carmel, Indiana is seeking a Unit Secretary/Patient Care Assistant for a full-time day shift (3 12-hour shifts per week). You will provide direct patient care under the direction of a Clinical Nurse and support the patient care team, while maintaining a clean, safe environment.

You may schedule tests, maintain patient records, assist with admissions/discharges, and handle equipment and supply logistics. Some units require continuous observation including suicide prevention.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• CPR may be required to complete Unit Secretary training.
• Requires previous comparable acute patient care experience or successful completion of the IU Health PCA education program.
• Requires current Basic Life Support certification (BLS) through AHA or IU Health PCA program completion.
• Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department policies.
• Requires basic knowledge of medical terminology.
• Requires knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
• Requires knowledge of infection control principles.
• Requires basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct patient care and unit clerical duties under the direction of a Clinical Nurse.
• Assists with information, directions and support to physicians, patients, families, customers and vendors.
• May schedule tests and procedures and maintain patient records; sign patients in and out of the unit.
• May be responsible for ordering, receiving and delivering equipment and supplies for the patient care team.
• May provide continuous observation including suicide prevention.
