Job description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities to meet organizational goals.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Related

Education:

• Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures and disease process.

Treatment:

• Welcome patients, assess wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, and monitor response to therapy.

Staff Related

• Assist in training direct care staff under nurse supervision.

Education/Communication:

• Follow policies, maintain a safe environment, disinfect equipment, and prepare for treatments.

RECORD KEEPING:

• Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data accurately, review treatment sheets, and ensure proper lab specimen handling.

INFECTION CONTROL:

• Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and educate patients and families as allowed by law.

TRANSITIONAL CARE UNIT:

• Follow new patients through initial weeks, reinforce education, coordinate care, and assist with home dialysis education and supply management.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Require physical strength for patient handling, standing, bending, and lifting up to 40 lbs. May involve travel and exposure to infectious materials.

EDUCATION AND LICENSES:

• High school diploma or G.E.D.; meet state or CMS certification requirements; maintain licensure and training as required.

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:

• Prior patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
