Job description

Purpose and Scope:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, training, and compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines. Assists in maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Supports the organization's commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI activities, including those related to patient satisfaction, and actively participates in process improvement activities to help patients achieve the organization’s Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Related

• Education: Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education about adequacy measures such as OLC, AMP, UKM, and disease process/access.
• Treatment: Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, obtain vital signs, initiate and monitor dialysis, evaluate patient response, and document all procedures and observations accurately.

Staff Related

• Assist in training direct care staff under supervision of a nurse.

Education/Communication

• Follow all policies and procedures, maintain a safe and clean environment, and ensure all equipment and surfaces are disinfected between treatments.

Record Keeping

• Participate in CQI activities, accurately enter treatment data, review treatment sheets, prepare charts, and handle laboratory specimens appropriately.

Infection Control

• Support infection control policies, participate in audits, and educate patients and families on infection prevention.

Transitional Care Unit

• Follow patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis, coordinate care, and assist with education and transition to home dialysis options.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

• Perform physical tasks including lifting, bending, and standing for prolonged periods, with accommodations as needed.

Education and Licenses

• High school diploma or G.E.D., and meet certification requirements per state and CMS standards. Maintain licensure and training as required.

Experience and Skills

• Previous patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR required.
