Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, MA is seeking a Patient Care Technician I to support nursing staff and provide essential patient care in a hospital setting. The role involves observation, data collection, basic nursing tasks, and coordination with RNs to ensure patient safety and comfort.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED, BLS certification, and experience in patient care or equivalent hours.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Demonstrated competency attainment in the Patient Care Technician I level, with 800 hours and at least 6 months in PCT I or 6 months of inpatient/outpatient direct patient care experience.
• English literacy, medical terminology, and basic computer skills.
• Ability to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations.
• Strong interpersonal skills to gather information and provide exceptional patient service.

Responsibilities

• Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes in patients (skin condition, vital signs, mental status).
• Maintains constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned by the Resource Nurse or designee.
• Assists in creating a safe environment and uses de-escalation techniques; participates in restraints as directed.
• Assists patients with daily living activities (hygiene, ambulation, meals).
• Aids in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques.
• Performs patient safety checks and uses fall-prevention strategies per policy.
• Takes and records vital signs and basic measurements (height/weight).
• Performs EKGs, POC tests, bladder scanning, collects and prepares specimens for lab transport.
• Performs unit-specific procedures and supports treatment setups as directed.
• Assists with treatments and procedures, prepares equipment, and provides emotional support to patients.
