Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Nursing Float Pool. This full-time day shift role supports patient care under RN supervision, performing basic nursing tasks and ensuring unit workflow.

Responsibilities include monitoring vitals, aiding with activities of daily living, reporting changes to staff, and maintaining patient rooms. A HS diploma, BLS, and CMA/CNA/EMT or nursing student status are required; sitters may alternate with PCT duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• CNA/CMA/EMT or nursing student with one semester of clinical completed required.
• American Heart Association BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic nursing care activities as delegated by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living (bathing, grooming, eating) and personal care.
• Reports abnormal findings or changes to nursing staff.
• Keeps patient rooms clean and orderly.
• Demonstrates flexibility, organization, and multi-tasking under stress.
• Prioritizes unit work and coordinates with staff to adapt to changing needs.
• Acts as liaison between patient care units and other departments.
• Answers call lights politely and communicates information to staff/family/patient.
• Manages overall unit workflow with charge RN or assistant manager.
• Performs pre-census and validates daily admission, discharge and census lists.

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent

CNA, CMA, EMT or nursing student (one semester clinical)
