Job summary

WVUH West Virginia University Hospitals is seeking a Nursing Assistant to provide direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. You will assist with daily living activities, basic clinical tasks, and transportation of patients and specimens in a fast‑paced hospital setting.

Responsibilities include phlebotomy, vital signs, nutrition communication, and assisting with examinations and procedures. This non-exempt role supports a 4‑hour scheduled week with varied shifts on site.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Certifications in Basic Life Support or HeartSaver First Aid within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Assist in direct patient care with basic physical tasks as directed by RN.
• Aid patients with activities of daily living and bed making.
• Transport patients safely to tests, procedures, or discharge.
• Transport specimens and items within the facility.
• Perform routine phlebotomy within department rules.
• Record vital signs and intake/output per policy.
• Provide respiratory support and assist with oxygen setup.
• Encourage use of Incentive Spirometer per procedure.
• Report changes in patient condition to RN immediately.
• Assist with examinations and procedures as directed.
• Assist with rehab/physical therapy activities.
• Communicate nutrition issues to RN.
• Provide total care within scope when assigned as sitter or under supervision.
• Maintain clean, safe environment to prevent infections.
• Report equipment repairs promptly.
• Support unit operations for smooth functioning.
• Answer calls and relay messages accurately.
• Run errands as requested.
• Unlicensed personnel may access medications during transport of non-controlled substances under supervision.
• Replace out-of-date items.
