Job summary

MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center is seeking a part-time Patient Access specialist for the day shift. You will register patients, verify insurance, collect payments, and provide information to hospital users and families. This role supports both outpatient and inpatient services across multiple areas.

The role requires a high school diploma, HFMA CRCR or NAHAM CHAA within one year, and at least one year of customer service experience, with strong communication and computer skills.

Qualifications

• Minimum one year of customer service experience; patient access experience preferred.
• HFMA CRCR or NAHAM CHAA required within one year of hire.
• Must be able to read, write, and speak English; strong interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Validate/obtain and enter demographic, clinical, financial, and insurance information by interviewing patients and guarantors.
• Register patients across multiple settings and patient types (inpatients, outpatients, ambulatory surgery, ED, etc.).
• Prepare patient estimates, inform patients of liabilities, and collect payments at check-in with receipts recorded in the system.
• Obtain signed physician orders for tests/procedures; prepare ID bracelets and required signatures.
• Maintain patient valuables according to authorization requirements if needed.

Description

Position Purpose

Provides patient focused customer service. Performs outpatient & / or inpatient registration & insurance verification functions; collects patient financial liability payments & ensures that patients meet financial requirements including Medicare medical necessity, payer pre-certifications & referrals. Provides general information to hospital users, patients, families & physician offices.

What You Will Do

• Responsible for validating/obtaining and entering demographic, clinical, financial, and insurance information into the patient accounting system by interviewing the patient, family member and/or guarantor.
• Performs activities that are related to registration in a variety of setting/locations and for multiple patient types (Inpatients, Outpatients, Ambulatory Surgery, Emergency Department, Diagnostic Outpatients, Labor & Delivery, Newborn, Lab Specimens, etc).
• Prepare patient estimate and informs patient/guarantor of their liabilities and collects appropriate patient liabilities, including co-payments, co-insurances, deductibles, deposits and outstanding balances at the point of check-in. In the collection of funds, documents payments/actions in the patient accounting system and provides the patient with a payment receipt.
• Obtains signed physician orders for all tests and procedures from physicians/offices.
• Prepares identification bracelets and patient ID labels. Obtains/scans patient/guarantor signatures on required forms (ID cards, insurance cards, consent to treatment, assignment of benefits, release of information, waivers, etc.). May audit & record the patient's valuables, securing appropriate authorizations, if needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent. HFMA CRCR or NAHAM CHAA required within one (1) year of hire.

Experience

• Minimum one (1) year customer service experience. Patient Access experience preferred.

Special Skills And Competencies

• Annual assessment of competency is completed every year.
• Must be able to read, write and/or speak English.
• Computer/PC experience/skills are required.
• Typing (40 words per minute) or data entry (50-60 keystrokes per minute) preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology desired.
• Excellent communication skills verbal & written, interpersonal skills are necessary in dealing with internal and external customers, including the ability to interpret customer requirements, recommend and take action to satisfy the customer's needs. Accuracy, attentiveness to detail and time management skills required.
