Job summary

MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in New Hampton, IA, seeks a part-time Patient Access representative to provide patient-focused registration, insurance verification, and financial counseling at check-in.

Responsibilities include entering demographic/insurance data, preparing estimates, collecting liabilities, obtaining physician orders, and supporting inpatient/outpatient services across ED, ambulatory, and labor/delivery settings. Strong communication and computer skills are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; HFMA CRCR or NAHAM CHAA within 1 year of hire.
• Minimum 1 year of customer service experience; Patient Access experience preferred.
• Typing 40 wpm or data entry 50–60 keystrokes per minute preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology desired.
• Excellent verbal and written communication; time management and attention to detail required.

Responsibilities

• Validate/enter demographic, clinical, financial, and insurance data into the system by interviewing patients/families.
• Register patients in multiple settings (Inpatients, Outpatients, Ambulatory Surgery, ED, Diagnostic; Labor & Delivery, Newborn, Lab).
• Prepare patient estimates and inform/collect liabilities; provide receipts.
• Obtain signed physician orders for tests and procedures.
• Prepare ID bracelets and collect necessary signatures; secure valuables when needed.

Position Purpose

Provides patient focused customer service. Performs outpatient & / or inpatient registration & insurance verification functions; collects patient financial liability payments & ensures that patients meet financial requirements including Medicare medical necessity, payer pre-certifications & referrals. Provides general information to hospital users, patients, families & physician offices.

What you will Do

• Responsible for validating/obtaining and entering demographic, clinical, financial, and insurance information into the patient accounting system by interviewing the patient, family member and/or guarantor.

• Preforms activities that are related to registration in a variety of setting/locations and for multiple patient types (Inpatients, Outpatients, Ambulatory Surgery, Emergency Department, Diagnostic Outpatients, Labor & Delivery, Newborn, Lab Specimens, etc).

• Prepare patient estimate and informs patient/guarantor of their liabilities and collects appropriate patient liabilities, including co-payments, co-insurances, deductibles, deposits and outstanding balances at the point of check-in. In the collection of funds, documents payments/actions in the patient accounting system and provides the patient with a payment receipt.

• Obtains signed physician orders for all tests and procedures from physicians/offices.

• Prepares identification bracelets and patient ID labels. Obtains/scans patient/guarantor signatures on required forms (ID cards, insurance cards, consent to treatment, assignment of benefits, release of information, waivers, etc.). May audit & record the patient's valuables, securing appropriate authorizations, if needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent.
  HFMA CRCR or NAHAM CHAA required within one (1) year of hire.

Experience

• Minimum one (1) year customer service experience. Patient Access experience preferred.

Special Skills and Competencies

• Annual assessment of competency is completed every year.

• Must be able to read, write and/or speak English.

• Computer/PC experience/skills are required.

• Typing (40 words per minute) or data entry (50-60 keystrokes per minute) preferred.

• Knowledge of medical terminology desired.

• Excellent communication skills verbal & written, interpersonal skills are necessary in dealing with internal and external customers, including the ability to interpret customer requirements, recommend and take action to satisfy the customer's needs. Accuracy, attentiveness to detail and time management skills required.
