Job summary

MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center is seeking a full-time Patient Access/Registration specialist to perform outpatient and inpatient registration and verify insurance. You will collect patient liabilities at check-in and provide information to patients, families and physician offices.

Responsibilities include obtaining physician orders, ensuring required signatures, and preparing patient IDs and bracelets. A high school diploma and 1 year of customer service experience are required; HFMA

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; HFMA CRCR or NAHAM CHAA within one year of hire.
  • Minimum one year customer service experience; Patient Access experience preferred.
  • Must read, write and speak English.
  • Typing at least 40 words per minute; basic data entry skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Validate and enter demographic, clinical, financial, and insurance information into the patient accounting system.
  • Register patients in various settings (inpatient, outpatient, ED, labs, etc.).
  • Prepare patient estimates, inform liabilities, and collect payments at check-in.
  • Obtain signed physician orders and collect required signatures and IDs.
  • Audit and secure patient valuables as needed.

Shift: Day Shift
Position Purpose

Provides patient focused customer service. Performs outpatient & / or inpatient registration & insurance verification functions; collects patient financial liability payments & ensures that patients meet financial requirements including Medicare medical necessity, payer pre-certifications & referrals. Provides general information to hospital users, patients, families & physician offices.

What you will Do
  • Responsible for validating/obtaining and entering demographic, clinical, financial, and insurance information into the patient accounting system by interviewing the patient, family member and/or guarantor.
  • Preforms activities that are related to registration in a variety of setting/locations and for multiple patient types (Inpatients, Outpatients, Ambulatory Surgery, Emergency Department, Diagnostic Outpatients, Labor & Delivery, Newborn, Lab Specimens, etc).
  • Prepare patient estimate and informs patient/guarantor of their liabilities and collects appropriate patient liabilities, including co-payments, co-insurances, deductibles, deposits and outstanding balances at the point of check-in. In the collection of funds, documents payments/actions in the patient accounting system and provides the patient with a payment receipt.
  • Obtains signed physician orders for all tests and procedures from physicians/offices.
  • Prepares identification bracelets and patient ID labels. Obtains/scans patient/guarantor signatures on required forms (ID cards, insurance cards, consent to treatment, assignment of benefits, release of information, waivers, etc.). May audit & record the patient's valuables, securing appropriate authorizations, if needed.
Hours/Schedule
  • 9 hour shift (6:30 – 4 or 7 – 4:30 or 7:30 – 5 rotates weekly), 4 days a week, 72 hours per pay period with rotating Saturdays 7:30 - 11
Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
    HFMA CRCR or NAHAM CHAA required within one (1) year of hire.
Experience
  • Minimum one (1) year customer service experience. Patient Access experience preferred.
Special Skills and Competencies
  • Annual assessment of competency is completed every year.
  • Must be able to read, write and/or speak English.
  • Computer/PC experience/skills are required.
  • Typing (40 words per minute) or data entry (50-60 keystrokes per minute) preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology desired.
  • Excellent communication skills verbal & written, interpersonal skills are necessary in dealing with internal and external customers, including the ability to interpret customer requirements, recommend and take action to satisfy the customer's needs. Accuracy, attentiveness to detail and time management skills required.
