Job summary

MercyOne Northeast Iowa seeks a part-time Medical Office/Registration Clerk to gather patient demographics and financial information, enter data, and pre-register tests in the outpatient areas of Waterloo. You will assist with room assignments, armbands, consents, and pre-visit workflows.

The role emphasizes accurate data entry, effective communication with patients and staff, and adherence to HIPAA and EMTALA policies in a busy hospital setting.

Qualifications

• Must read, write, and understand English and communicate effectively with patients, visitors, staff and physicians.
• Completion of Medical Secretary program or other general office training preferred.
• One-year medical office experience (scheduling, insurance, or registration) preferred; hospital experience and/or medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills, Windows experience.
• Knowledge of database software and mainframe information systems.
• Ability to convey positive image and communicate tactfully and professionally with staff, patients and the public.
• Ability to work with diverse groups of people and to work under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Makes determinations regarding need for hospital issued ABN waiver.
• Escorts/transports patients to assigned area and meets and greets patients as registration begins.
• Scans all needed information (physician orders, drivers licenses, insurance cards, consents, etc.).
• Pre-register all scheduled tests.
• Adheres to safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures, including HIPAA and EMTALA.

What You Will Do

• Gathers patient demographic and financial information. Obtains appropriate signatures.
• Answers telephone, bed assignments made, stat cleans ordered and appropriate communication to house supervisor.

• Makes determinations regarding need for hospital issued Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN waiver).
• Assures patient escorted/transported to assigned area. Meet and greet patients as registration process begins.
• Scans all needed information (physician orders, drivers licenses, insurance cards, consents, etc.).
• Pre-register all scheduled tests.
• Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures. Follows HIPAA, and EMTALA regulations per hospital policy.

Hours/Schedule

• 6 FTE; 24 hours per pay period

Patient access located at our Women's and Outpatient area with Surgery, Outpatient Clinic, Wound Clinic and Breast Clinic patient's check-in
