Job summary

MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center is seeking a part-time Patient Access specialist to support outpatient and inpatient registration and insurance verification. You will collect patient liabilities at check-in, provide estimates, and ensure accurate documentation across multiple settings.

The role requires a high school diploma, 1 year of customer service experience, and strong English communication. A rotating shift and PRN schedule may apply, with comprehensive benefits for part-time staff.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; HFMA CRCR or NAHAM CHAA within 1 year of hire.
• Minimum 1 year of customer service experience; patient access experience preferred.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to handle sensitive information.

Responsibilities

• Validate/enter demographic, clinical, financial, and insurance information by interviewing patients and guarantors.
• Perform registration across multiple settings and patient types (inpatient, outpatient, ED, etc.).
• Prepare patient estimates, collect liabilities (co-pays, deductibles, etc.) and document payments in the system.
• Obtain signed physician orders; prepare patient IDs and required signatures; assist with documents as needed.

Position Purpose

Provides patient focused customer service. Performs outpatient & / or inpatient registration & insurance verification functions; collects patient financial liability payments & ensures that patients meet financial requirements including Medicare medical necessity, payer pre-certifications & referrals. Provides general information to hospital users, patients, families & physician offices.

What You Will Do

• Responsible for validating/obtaining and entering demographic, clinical, financial, and insurance information into the patient accounting system by interviewing the patient, family member and/or guarantor.
• Preforms activities that are related to registration in a variety of setting/locations and for multiple patient types (Inpatients, Outpatients, Ambulatory Surgery, Emergency Department, Diagnostic Outpatients, Labor & Delivery, Newborn, Lab Specimens, etc)
• Prepare patient estimate and informs patient/guarantor of their liabilities and collects appropriate patient liabilities, including co-payments, co-insurances, deductibles, deposits and outstanding balances at the point of check-in. In the collection of funds, documents payments/actions in the patient accounting system and provides the patient with a payment receipt.
• Obtains signed physician orders for all tests and procedures from physicians/offices.
• Prepares identification bracelets and patient ID labels. Obtains/scans patient/guarantor signatures on required forms (ID cards, insurance cards, consent to treatment, assignment of benefits, release of information, waivers, etc.). May audit & record the patient's valuables, securing appropriate authorizations, if needed.

Education

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent. HFMA CRCR or NAHAM CHAA required within one (1) year of hire.

Experience

• Minimum one (1) year customer service experience. Patient Access experience preferred.

Special Skills And Competencies

• Annual assessment of competency is completed every year.
• Must be able to read, write and/or speak English.
• Computer/PC experience/skills are required.
• Typing (40 words per minute) or data entry (50-60 keystrokes per minute) preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology desired.
• Excellent communication skills verbal & written, interpersonal skills are necessary in dealing with internal and external customers, including the ability to interpret customer requirements, recommend and take action to satisfy the customer's needs. Accuracy, attentiveness to detail and time management skills required.
