Job summary

MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center is seeking a Patient Access Registrar to perform outpatient and inpatient registration and insurance verification, collecting patient liabilities at check-in. You will interview patients to obtain accurate demographic and financial information and help ensure Medicare/ payer requirements are met.

The role requires English fluency, strong data entry, and computer skills, with full-time day-shift hours and rotating schedules.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; HFMA CRCR or NAHAM CHAA within 1 year.
• Minimum 1 year customer service experience; Patient Access experience preferred.
• Must read, write and speak English; proficient computer/PC skills.
• Typing 40 wpm or data entry 50–60 keystrokes per minute preferred.

Responsibilities

Description

Position Purpose: Provides patient focused customer service. Performs outpatient & / or inpatient registration & insurance verification functions; collects patient financial liability payments & ensures that patients meet financial requirements including Medicare medical necessity, payer pre-certifications & referrals. Provides general information to hospital users, patients, families & physician offices.

What You Will Do

• Responsible for validating/obtaining and entering demographic, clinical, financial, and insurance information into the patient accounting system by interviewing the patient, family member and/or guarantor.
• Preforms activities that are related to registration in a variety of setting/locations and for multiple patient types (Inpatients, Outpatients, Ambulatory Surgery, Emergency Department, Diagnostic Outpatients, Labor & Delivery, Newborn, Lab Specimens, etc).
• Prepare patient estimate and informs patient/guarantor of their liabilities and collects appropriate patient liabilities, including co-payments, co-insurances, deductibles, deposits and outstanding balances at the point of check-in. In the collection of funds, documents payments/actions in the patient accounting system and provides the patient with a payment receipt.
• Obtains signed physician orders for all tests and procedures from physicians/offices.
• Prepares identification bracelets and patient ID labels. Obtains/scans patient/guarantor signatures on required forms (ID cards, insurance cards, consent to treatment, assignment of benefits, release of information, waivers, etc.). May audit & record the patient’s valuables, securing appropriate authorizations, if needed.

Hours/Schedule

• 9 hour shift (6:30 — 4 or 7 — 4:30 or 7:30 — 5 rotates weekly), 4 days a week, 72 hours per pay period with rotating Saturdays 7:30 – 11

Education Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent. HFMA CRCR or NAHAM CHAA required within one (1) year of hire.

Experience

• Minimum one (1) year customer service experience. Patient Access experience preferred.

Special Skills And Competencies

• Annual assessment of competency is completed every year.
• Must be able to read, write and/or speak English.
• Computer/PC experience/skills are required.
• Typing (40 words per minute) or data entry (50-60 keystrokes per minute) preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology desired.
• Excellent communication skills verbal & written, interpersonal skills are necessary in dealing with internal and external customers, including the ability to interpret customer requirements, recommend and take action to satisfy the customer’s needs. Accuracy, attentiveness to detail and time management skills required.
