MercyOne Northeast Iowa is seeking a part-time Medical Secretary to support patient access in the Women’s and Outpatient areas. The role involves gathering demographic and financial information, securing signatures, and guiding patients through registration processes.

You will handle phone inquiries, prepare documentation, and ensure proper scanning of documents while adhering to HIPAA and EMTALA guidelines. The team emphasizes patient-centered care and accuracy.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write and understand English clearly.
• Completion of Medical Secretary program or general office training preferred.
• One year medical office experience (scheduling, insurance, or registration) preferred.
• Strong computer skills including Windows, database software, and mainframe information systems.
• Ability to convey a positive image and communicate professionally.
• Ability to work with diverse groups and under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Gathers patient demographic and financial information; obtains signatures.
• Answers telephone and communicates with house supervisor; notes bed assignments and stat orders.
• Informs patients of hospital regulations; secures armband; obtains signatures on documents.
• Determines need for hospital issued ABN waiver.
• Ensures patients are escorted to assigned areas; greets patients during registration.
• Scans physician orders, drivers licenses, insurance cards, consents, etc.
• Pre-registers all scheduled tests.

Gathers patient demographic and financial information and enters into computer system. Assigns patient rooms, prepares appropriate documentation and transports/escorts patient to assigned area.

What You Will Do

• Gathers patient demographic and financial information. Obtains appropriate signatures.
• Answers telephone, bed assignments made, stat cleans ordered and appropriate communication to house supervisor.
• Informs patient of hospital regulations, secures armband and obtains signatures on appropriate documents.
• Makes determinations regarding need for hospital issued Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN waiver).
• Assures patient escorted/transported to assigned area. Meet and greet patients as registration process begins.
• Scans all needed information (physician orders, drivers licenses, insurance cards, consents, etc.).
• Pre-register all scheduled tests.
• Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures. Follows HIPAA, and EMTALA regulations per hospital policy.

Hours/Schedule

• 6 FTE; 24 hours per pay period; Monday-Friday

Patient access located at our Women's and Outpatient area with Surgery, Outpatient Clinic, Wound Clinic and Breast Clinic patient's check-in

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires the ability to read, write and understand the English language, and communicate effectively with patients, visitors, staff and physicians while performing their job duties.
• Completion of Medical Secretary program or other general office training preferred.
• One- year medical office experience (scheduling, insurance, or registration) preferred. Hospital experience and or medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills, Windows experience. Database software, mainframe information systems.
• Ability to convey positive image and communicate tactfully and professionally with staff, patients and the public.
• Ability to work with diverse groups of people and to work under pressure.
