MercyOne Northeast Iowa is seeking a Medical Secretary for full-time day-shift coverage at MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center. The role involves gathering patient information, registering and pre-projecting tests, handling phone inquiries, and coordinating with the house supervisor.

You will secure signatures and ensure compliance with HIPAA and EMTALA while providing courteous, professional patient service. The position requires strong computer skills, familiarity with medical office workflows,

Qualifications

• Completion of Medical Secretary program or other general office training preferred.
• One year medical office experience (scheduling, insurance, or registration) preferred.
• Strong reading/writing English and clear communication with patients and staff.
• Proficiency with Windows and basic database/mainframe software preferred.

Responsibilities

• Gathers patient demographic and financial information and enters into the computer system.
• Answers telephone, assigns beds, arranges cleanings, and communicates with the house supervisor.
• Informs patients of hospital regulations, secures armbands and obtains signatures.
• Pre-registers scheduled tests and scans needed information (licenses, insurance cards, etc.).
• Adheres to safety, infection control and HIPAA/EMTALA policies; greets patients at registration.

Position Purpose

Gathers patient demographic and financial information and enters into computer system. Assigns patient rooms, prepares appropriate documentation and transports/escorts patient to assigned area.

What You Will Do

• Gathers patient demographic and financial information. Obtains appropriate signatures.
• Answers telephone, bed assignments made, stat cleans ordered and appropriate communication to house supervisor.
• Informs patient of hospital regulations, secures armband and obtains signatures on appropriate documents.
• Makes determinations regarding need for hospital issued Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN waiver).
• Assures patient escorted/transported to assigned area. Meet and greet patients as registration process begins.
• Scans all needed information (physician orders, drivers licenses, insurance cards, consents, etc.).
• Pre-register all scheduled tests.
• Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures. Follows HIPAA, and EMTALA regulations per hospital policy.

Hours/Schedule

• 8 FTE; 64 hours per bi-weekly pay period; 1st shift; will include a weekend and holiday rotation.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires the ability to read, write and understand the English language, and communicate effectively with patients, visitors, staff and physicians while performing their job duties.
• Completion of Medical Secretary program or other general office training preferred.
• One- year medical office experience (scheduling, insurance, or registration) preferred. Hospital experience and or medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills, Windows experience. Database software, mainframe information systems.
• Ability to convey positive image and communicate tactfully and professionally with staff, patients and the public.
• Ability to work with diverse groups of people and to work under pressure.
