Job summary

UVM Health - UVM Medical Center is seeking a Patient Access Specialist for the Main Campus Emergency Department in Burlington, VT. This 100% onsite role supports patient flow, insurance management, and admissions in a high-acuity setting.

Shifts are Saturdays and Sundays and every other Friday, 3:00PM-11:30PM. The ideal candidate has 1+ year of clinical customer service experience; EMT certification or related EMT experience is highly preferred, with strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• Associates degree; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
• EMT Certification highly preferred.
• Requires a minimum of one year’s experience in customer service, registration, insurance management or administrative support in a clinical environment.
• EMT experience, medical assistant or technician in a busy clinical environment is strongly preferred.
• Requires an ability to diffuse angry/emotional customers and handle pressure with excellent verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate emergent, urgent, transfer and admission access to the organization via ambulatory and EMS arrival; educate and support patients while managing their finances in the ED.
• Perform initial acute screening for ambulatory arrivals and facilitate access to clinical care with the team.
• Navigate multiple information systems to support ED operations while delivering compassionate care in a chaotic environment.

Job description

This is 100% onsite work located at our Main Campus - Emergency Department in Burlington, VT.

This position is scheduled to work Saturday and Sunday and every other Friday: 3:00PM-11:30PM.

The Patient Access Specialist ED is a fundamental part of the patient experience and is a key contributor to the financial health of the organization. The specialist coordinates emergent, urgent, transfer and admission access to the organization via ambulatory and EMS arrival, while ensuring the patients are educated, supported and financially managed while in the emergency department. This includes accurate identification, registration, insurance management, follow-up scheduling and ADT transfer functions. The specialist performs initial acute screening for ambulatory arrivals, working in tandem with technicians to expedite access to clinical care; he/she facilitates all financial management functions, interviewing patients at the bedside in collaboration with physicians, nursing and support staff in a highly acute, fast paced and emotionally charged environment. The incumbent functions independently, navigating complex regulatory requirements while coordinating activities across multiple disparate information systems to support emergency department clinical operations while delivering a caring message in a chaotic environment.
