Job summary

The University of Iowa is seeking a Patient Access Specialist in Iowa City for 100% time to schedule patient appointments across outpatient clinics, verify visit types, providers, dates, and prerequisites, and coordinate all necessary preparatory tests and records.

You will inform patients of prep instructions, ensure financial clearance, and act as a patient advocate while assisting with scheduling issues and policy adherence.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Typically 6 months – 1 year administrative experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in computer spreadsheet and database applications.

Responsibilities

• Schedules patient appointments for multiple outpatient clinics and ensures correct visit types, Provider, date, length of visit, and time.
• Coordinates preparatory tests and obtains records to maximize visit efficiency.
• Informs patients of visit-specific prep instructions and notifies about upcoming appointments.
• Follows workflows to confirm financial clearance for visits.
• Anticipates patient needs and serves as a patient advocate.
• Assists and resolves scheduling issues and uses independent judgment for requests outside scheduling scope.
• Upholds department practices and professionalism; may mentor staff and attend meetings as scheduling content expert.
