Job summary

Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC is hiring a Patient Access Associate I to provide compassionate registration, verify insurance, and support patients through the admission process. This role requires attention to detail, excellent customer service, and ability to navigate hospital systems like Soarian Scheduling, TeleTracking, and HDX Eligibility.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
• Associate's degree preferred.
• At least 3 years in patient access/registration, billing, cash collections, insurance, pre-certifications, or related healthcare experience.
• Excellent customer service and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide exceptional customer service to patients, family members, clinicians, third-party payers, hospital employees, and coworkers.
• Register patients and verify demographic, financial, and insurance information for hospital and ancillary services.
• Contact insurance carriers and/or utilize automated insurance verification systems to determine coverage and eligibility.
• Review and verify insurance information through eligibility systems, including HDX Eligibility.
• Follow government regulations related to MSP, MSPQ, and ABN.
• Obtain and verify required patient, insurance, financial, and referral information.
• Contact patients or guarantors to obtain missing information.
• Utilize EDM and other systems to capture and maintain documents.
• Verify patient information in all registration pathways and systems.
• Scan/copy identification, insurance cards, and other documents.
• Obtain signatures on forms.
• Schedule appointments using Soarian Scheduling.
• Support Nursing Staffing, physicians, and administrators with bed placement.
• Document ADT transactions and status changes via TeleTracking.
• Coordinate with Financial Counselors and Case Management when needed.
• Enter lab and radiology orders into hospital systems.
• Identify self-pay or Medicaid-eligible patients and refer for assistance.
• Collect copayments, deductibles, and other payments.
• Ensure confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
• Cross-train in various registration areas and participate in training.
• Attend mandatory training and compliance activities.
