Job summary

The Pathologists’ Assistant at HCA Healthcare in Largo, FL assists pathologists in surgical pathology services. Under general supervision, you work independently on examination and preparation of surgical pathology specimens, coordinating workflow in frozen section and gross examination areas.

You will determine grossing priorities with on-site pathologists, relay instructions, maintain records, and support staining and special procedures while upholding the Code of Conduct and mission of HCA

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; Masters preferred.
• 3–5 years’ experience in a pathology histology laboratory.
• ASCP Certification preferred.
• 3–5 years grossing experience in a hospital setting accepted in lieu of ASCP Certification or Master’s degree.

Responsibilities

• Organize and improve workflow in frozen section and gross examination areas.
• Collaborate with on-site Pathologists to determine grossing priorities.
• Take instruction from Pathologists on grossing technique and quality assessment.
• Share relevant information with other HCA pathologist assistants to enhance productivity.
• Triage specimens, dictate gross findings, and refer tissue sections for microscopic review.
• Identify tissue for microscopic study and select proper fixatives.
• Perform procedures such as frozen sections and decalcification; manage records.
• Maintain records of dissections and dictation; assist in reporting.
• Photograph specimens for teaching and documentation; maintain records.
• Perform other duties incidental to the work and uphold Code of Conduct.
