Job summary

YMCA of Greater Houston is seeking a part-time Childwatch Counselor in Katy to supervise children, ensure safety, and create a welcoming environment for families attending YMCA programs. You will support age-appropriate activities, maintain records, and collaborate with staff to uphold YMCA policies and core values.

This role offers flexible shifts, training opportunities, and a supportive team dedicated to youth development and community service.

Qualifications

• At least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
• At least 6 months of experience working with youth at a childcare facility, church, school or equivalent (preferred).
• Strong awareness of child safety and the ability to respond to emergency situations appropriately.
• Must be able to successfully pass CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention trainings.
• Ability to engage with children positively and create an environment that fosters learning and respect.
• Ability to plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
• Previous experience with diverse populations.
• Current record of tuberculosis examination and/or current local health department regulations, examinations, and/or immunization as required by the local or State Department of Health.
• Pass a local/state background and FBI fingerprinting check.

Responsibilities

• Supervision and Safety: Monitor children and adhere to YMCA policies; assist with attendance, incident reports, and headcounts.
• Behavior Management: Use positive techniques; support distressed children; communicate observations to staff.
• Activity Implementation: Provide age-appropriate activities per curriculum; foster positive social interactions.
• Policy Adherence: Follow health, safety, child protection, confidentiality policies; report concerns.
• Daily Operations: Maintain clean, organized environment per program standards.
• Leadership: Supervise children under Lead; model YMCA values.
• Relationship Building: Maintain relations with children, parents, staff; attend meetings.
• Administrative Duties: Check children in/out using software; ensure devices charged.
• Child Abuse Prevention: Report suspected abuse; ensure sign-in/sign-out; monitor access.
