Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Houston is seeking a dedicated Childwatch Counselor to supervise children, create a safe and welcoming space, and support families during YMCA programs. You’ll implement age-appropriate activities, model the YMCA values, and ensure proper check-in/out, safety, and privacy protocols.

Qualifications

• At least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• At least 6 months of experience with youth in childcare, church, school or equivalent (preferred).
• Strong awareness of child safety and ability to respond to emergencies.
• Must pass CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention trainings.
• Ability to engage with children positively and create a learning environment.
• Plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate program activities.
• Experience with diverse populations.
• Background and FBI fingerprint check required.

Responsibilities

• Supervision and Safety: monitor activities and ensure safety, assist with basic needs, maintain attendance/incident records, conduct headcounts, and follow YMCA protocols.
• Behavior Management: address behavioral issues calmly, provide comfort, and update staff on observations and attendance.
• Activity Implementation: run age-appropriate activities per curriculum and promote positive social interactions.
• Policy Adherence: follow health, safety, and confidentiality policies, keep environment clean, report concerns.
• Daily Operations: maintain Childwatch standards and youth development guidelines.
• Leadership: supervise children under Childwatch Lead, model YMCA values.
• Relationship Building: maintain positive relations with children, families, staff, and participate in trainings.
• Administrative Duties: check children in/out using software, manage devices.
• Child Abuse Prevention: report suspicions and follow mandated reporting.
