Job summary

YMCA of Greater Houston is seeking a Part-time Childwatch Counselor to oversee safety and engagement for children while parents participate in YMCA programs. You will support routine care, activities, and documentation in a warm, welcoming environment.

The role emphasizes strong safety awareness, CPR/First Aid, and positive behavior guidance, with opportunities to collaborate with staff and contribute to youth development within the YMCA program standards.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• At least 6 months of youth childcare experience preferred.
• Strong awareness of child safety; respond to emergencies appropriately.
• CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and child abuse trainings required.
• Ability to engage children positively and foster learning and respect.
• Ability to plan and implement age-appropriate activities.
• Experience with diverse populations.
• Background check and FBI fingerprinting required.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and ensure safety of children in a welcoming Childwatch setting; monitor activities and maintain records.
• Apply positive behavior management; respond calmly to issues and provide support to children.
• Implement a variety of age-appropriate activities; encourage positive social interactions.
• Follow policies related to health, safety, and confidentiality; maintain a clean environment.
• Support daily operations and assist Childwatch Lead; follow YMCA standards and leadership expectations.
• Build positive relationships with children, parents, and staff; participate in meetings and trainings.
• Operate designated check-in/out software; ensure devices are charged and secured.
• Report concerns per policies; monitor high-risk areas and ensure proper access.
• Adhere to boundaries and prevention procedures for child protection.
