Job summary

Penn Medicine Cherry Hill is hiring a part-time Phlebotomist Laboratory Assistant to draw blood for diagnostic testing from patients of all ages and to process specimens in the laboratory.

The role requires on‑the‑job or structured phlebotomy training, performs venipuncture, labels specimens accurately, and uses EMR/LIS systems. Candidates with Phlebotomy certification (ASCP) or MLA preferred will be hired at the II level.

Qualifications

• H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
• Phlebotomy training and experience in an outpatient or hospital setting
• Prior experience in hospital laboratory receiving area preferred
• Prior experience with the Laboratory Information System preferred
• Certification as a PBT or MLA by a minimum knowledge-based exam such as the Board of Certification PBT(ASCP) or MLA(ASCP) preferred
• Certified individuals will be hired as Phlebotomist Laboratory Assistant II.

Responsibilities

• Utilizes knowledge of growth and development when communicating to various age groups
• Explains appropriate information according to age and developmental level of patients and visitors
• Listens to patient's queries, comments and/or concerns and provides appropriate information and responses
• Introduces self when interacting with patients, families, visitors or other employees.
• Entry of patient demographics, test orders, billing information into EMR/LIS systems
• Performs accurate venipuncture and micro (capillary) techniques in sample collection
• May perform specialized collection including breath alcohol testing, hair collection, and EKGs
• Properly labels specimens with 100% accuracy
• Follows SOPs for processing of specimens and resolves related problems
• Operates pneumatic tube system and adheres to Infection Control policies
• Maintains accurate logs/ worksheets as required by SOPs
• Researches phone inquiries regarding specimens/test results and calls caller back
• Prepares specimens and arranges dispatch/pick-up
• Projects professionalism in appearance and conduct
• Complies with Hospital, Laboratory, Safety, and HIPAA regulations
• Responsible for staffing across shifts, weekends and holidays
