Job Description

The Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant is responsible for processing laboratory test requests by collecting specimens and entering required data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Clinical Information System. This position provides reports and related information to clients, collects and prepares specimens for reference laboratory testing, and performs Point-of-Care (POC) testing as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and collect patient and occasional employee blood samples in accordance with safety guidelines.
• Conduct waived and Point-of-Care (POC) testing, entering and verifying results in the LIS.
• Process inpatient and outpatient lab orders, collect specimens, and ensure accurate documentation.
• Prepare, package, and send specimens to reference laboratories, and scan results into the appropriate systems.
• Provide professional customer service to patients, families, physicians, and departments.
• Assist with inventory and general clerical duties.
• Maintain up-to-date phlebotomy skills, equipment knowledge, and safety practices.
• Obtain additional non-blood specimens (e.g., throat, nasopharyngeal, urine) as needed.
• Remain proficient in laboratory systems such as Athena, 4Medica, and Meditech.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma and an approved phlebotomy program or 4-5 years relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
• Related Work Experience: 2 years previous pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Licensure/Certification: PBT (ASCP) and/or CLPIB (NCA) programs, MA certification preferred.
• Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
  • General knowledge of phlebotomy procedures and practices.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to provide compassionate patient care and orientation.
  • Computer and office experience is preferred but not required.
• CPR required: Only certifications issued by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross will be accepted.
