Job summary

YMCA Lifeguard position in Cary, NC, seeks a capable individual to supervise the pool, deck and surrounding areas, ensuring safe swimming conditions and a positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement.

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, you will follow YMCA policies, complete required reports, and participate in staff meetings and trainings while maintaining clear communication and emergency readiness.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years of age.
• Certifications required: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
• Current Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent.
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
• Multi-lingual desired but not required.

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies immediately according to YMCA policies.
• Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants and staff.
• Applies safety rules and maintains records per YMCA and state codes.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures necessary equipment is available.
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions on arrival.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding and takes appropriate action.
• Attends staff meetings and in-service training.
• Models relationship-building skills in interactions.
• Maintains clear communication within area of responsibility.
