Job summary

Tidewater Community College seeks a part-time Professional English Tutor for the Open Door Program to provide individual tutoring in English, Writing and Research and to promote independent learning using technology tools.

The role involves coordinating with advisors, maintaining records, and encouraging students to utilize campus resources while supporting diverse learners with flexible evening/weekend hours.

Qualifications

• Candidates must have completed at least 60 credits of higher education with at least a “B” average in the content area or related subject area.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work with a diverse student population.
• Ability to adjust tutoring methods to meet various learning styles.
• Ability to work well with staff, students, and faculty at the professional level.
• Proficient in basic computer usage (Microsoft Office, GoogleDocs, Zoom).

Responsibilities

• Tutor students in English, Writing and Research subjects.
• Encourage students to develop a systemic approach to studying.
• Meet with Academic Skills Advisor and instructors to plan academic support.
• Refer students to campus resources as needed and maintain records of tutoring sessions.
• Reach out to students to encourage them to seek academic support.
• Perform other duties consistent with the position of Professional Tutor.
